yesterday, i read "glossolalia" #11, a gorgeous letterpressed zine about moving from portland (oregon) to new york city. it can be unfolded & flipped over to reveal a poster of fidel castro eating an ice cream cone & the words "don't fuck with hope," which has been proudly hung in my living room. (this zine is written by sarah contrary.)
also yesterday i read sarah evans's split zine with her sister, "messy baby/messy dog," which is all about homemade baby food & dog food. very informative, although i have neither a baby or a dog. i also read the "root" #5/"stab" #7 split, which i wish they'd let me distro because it rules, but they say it's already too outdated. *sad face*
the day before that, i read "keep loving keep fighting" #8, which is all aout saying goodbye to new orleans because hope moved to baton rouge to finish college. she stayed in new orleans during hurricane katrina, which is what "keep loving keep fighting" #6 & #7 are mostly about, & this issue is about PTSD & how new orleans has changed since the hurricane & stuff, but it's so so so so so good. it's not as depressing as i am making it sound. or maybe it is, but it's still really good.
& then before that, i re-read "doris" #26 (the R, S, T issue--"robin," "shy," "truth," "social ecology"), "mute as bottles" (about lou's partner being arrested after some big economics/globalizaton protests in australia), & "skinned heart" #1 & #2 (#1 is a really intense old-school riot grrrl-style personal zine about feminism, racism, sexual abuse, punk rock, etc, & #2 is about taking a stand against oppressive language & how language belies people's true political motivations).
i have read like a gazillion zines lately, but these are the stand-outs of the last few days, & all are available through my distro, or will be there soon.
